Some background about this article--We have a systemwide pacing guide, and, fortunately for me, teaching nonfiction falls in the third quarter. This works well with Iditarod. One of the skills taught is identifying block and point by point organization in a nonfiction selection. Block organization presents a number of details about one subject and then presents similar details about another subject, within one selection. Point by point organization presents a detail about a subject, and then presents a corresponding detail about the other subject. The article I wrote about McGrath and my town was a second activity for the students. By coincidence, the article in our ELA text is about Amundsen's and Robert Scott's attempts to reach the South Pole first. It was a perfect fit with Iditarod! This article also asks the students to identify the author's purpose.
If you want to use the article for your students, that's ok with me. It's in Adobe so it should print. Or you may want to substitute your town or city for the Mt. Pleasant information.
