Hello from Central Elementary in Sidney, Nebraska! We call it "Iditarod Central" this time of year! All five classes of fourth graders created quilts that represented the state symbols of Nebraska and Alaska. This project was done across content areas. The students did Internet research on Alaska symbols during computer class. The quilt blocks were created and tied during art class.
While learning about Alaska, the students discovered that our state literally shares common thread with Alaska. Both state flags have a navy blue background and gold thread (The Big Dipper for Alaska and Nebraska's State Seal). Our quilts were tied with gold embroidery floss and framed in navy blue. We will develop deeper common threads as we learn about other students and places while tracking the quilts' origins and destinations. We sent a Sidney postcard, a phamphlet on the Fort Sidney Museum, a family activity magazine about Cheyenne County, and tatoo's from Cabela's with our quilts.
